About the SEA Exam

The Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA) is the official exam for placing children into public secondary schools in Trinidad & Tobago. Administered by the Ministry of Education and scored by CXC, the SEA tests students on English Language Arts (writing, grammar, reading, spelling) and Mathematics based on Standards 3–5 curriculum.

The exam consists of three papers:
1. English Language Arts Writing (creative or expository) – 50 minutes
2. Mathematics – 75 minutes
3. English Language Arts (grammar, punctuation, spelling, reading comprehension) – 75 minutes.

Exam Structure & Time Allocation

Working times per paper:

  • ELA Writing: 50 minutes actual writing
  • Mathematics: 75 minutes actual working time
  • ELA (Grammar & Comprehension): 75 minutes working time

Subjects, Scoring, & Placement Links

Subjects Covered:
* ELA Writing: Narrative or expository, scored on content, language use, grammar & mechanics, and organisation.
* ELA (Grammar & Comprehension): 36 items including spelling, punctuation, capitalisation, grammar, reading comprehension (non-fiction, poetry, graphic text).
* Mathematics: Covers number, measurement, geometry, and statistics – based on Standards 3–5 content.

Scoring & Placement:
Raw scores are scaled, then weighted: Mathematics 100%, ELA (grammar/comprehension) 60%, ELA Writing 40%. The combined composite score determines secondary school placement.

How to Register as a Private Candidate for the SEA Exam

Yes, you can officially withdraw your child from public primary school in Trinidad & Tobago. To do this, notify the Ministry of Education in writing of your intent to homeschool your child. Then, compile proof of home-schooling (lesson logs and teacher signatures). Then, complete the private-candidate form on the MOE portal and pay the nominal fee. Finally, submit everything before the published deadline. Consequently, you’ll secure your child’s spot on exam day.
